The first thing my new patient said to me today was “Why does my arm hurt?”. The pain in his arm started in the shoulder and was radiating all the way down into his hand. Pain in the arm is usually a result of the nerve being crushed by overly tight muscles.
While it sounds quite simple, the nerve travels through several areas, so there are many different places where tight muscles can lead to arm pain. These include the facet joints in the neck, in between the scalene muscles at the front of the neck, around the first rib, under the pectoral major, and around the elbow, to name just a few.
We see a lot of patients with this kind of issue where they spend time working with their hands above their heads. It can also be caused by whiplash, poor posture, resting on your elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Different people also experience different symptoms. We see people experiencing this kind of issue who tell us they have experienced pain coming from the rotator cuff muscle at the back of the shoulder down the arm, as well as weakness, coldness, tingling, heaviness, or sometimes shooting pains down the arm.
Thankfully, the treatment for this is normally quite straightforward, involving adjustments to the joints around the entrapment sight. In most cases, around six treatments can get people out of pain. Acupuncture (dry needling) can also help, especially when dealing with rotator cuff referral.
